Even with most people distracted by the Giants or Patriots or whatever elaborate gameday dish they’ve been working on, this weekend still marked the first time in history that two movies opened above $20 million against the Super Bowl.

Based on studio estimates, Chronicle held off The Woman in Black to take the top spot this weekend, though Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Potter outing was impressive in its own right.

Chronicle debuted to an estimated $22 million, which is the fourth-highest Super Bowl debut ever and second-best among movies targeting at men behind Taken ($24.7 million). It did earn less than major found footage flicks like Cloverfield ($40.06 million) and last month’s The Devil Inside ($33.7 million), not to mention the last two Paranormal Activity movies, though that shouldn’t detract too much from this movie’s success.

Synopsis

The first trailer for Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom” is out… and, no surprise, it’s consummately quirky. The trailer for the Focus Features film has an ax-wielding Bill Murray, a boy with a patch on his eye and another kid who gets struck by lightning. The first themed “land” will be built at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with construction expected to start by 2013.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide has sealed a deal with filmmaker James Cameron and producer Jon Landau, Fox and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment to create themed attractions at Disney parks based on the 2009 movie.

The first Avatar attraction will be inside the Animal Kingdom park. Disney said this was chosen because “with its emphasis on living in harmony with nature, Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the Avatar stories, which share the same philosophy.”

The deal is exclusive to Disney, which plans to roll out other Avatar attractions over time.

The parks will not only play off the huge hit movie which dominated the box office for months in 2010, but also benefit from the release to two more movies now in pre-production. Cameron has announced plans to release those movies at Christmas 2014 followed by the second at Christmas 2015.

Four newcomers weren’t quite strong enough to unseat The Lion King (in 3D), which held the top spot for the second weekend in a row.

The Lion King in 3D achieved $21.9 million this weekend, bringing the re-release’s 10-day total to $61.5 million. When added to previous Lion King grosses, the movie has now made $390 million, which is good for 12th place on the all-time domestic chart. Many theaters are opting to continue to play the movie past the initial two-week engagement, and therefore it’s now guaranteed to top $400 million and enter the all-time Top 10.

It was a box-office bloodbath for Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night among others over the weekend. On the bright side, The Help climbed to the top spot, due to a combination of a strong hold and those weak new releases, while Rise of the Planet of the Apes took second.

It marked the first time since early January that a movie has risen to No. 1 after previously debuting lower. The last instance was True Grit, but the more thematically comparable The Blind Side also did it. The Help has dusted Julie & Julia and Eat Pray Love, the past female-driven August book adaptations that inspired its release, by a wide margin.

Last Friday, Catwoman’s stunt double had an accident during the The Dark Knight Rises filming, she crushed a super-expensive IMAX camera as you can watch in the video.

It’s unclear who messed up, the stunt-double or the cameraman. It was all shot outside some building at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

No one was hurt.

She is the double for Anne Hathaway as Catwoman:

Rise of the Planet of the Apes climbed to the top with $54.8 million on approximately 5,400 screens at 3,648 locations, which ranked as the fourth highest-grossing August opening ever. Among comparable movies, the franchise reboot’s launch was superior to District 9‘s $37.4 million and Terminator Salvation‘s $42.6 million and close to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra‘s $54.7 million (on the same weekend in 2009). It even grossed more than I, Robot‘s $52.2 million (though sold fewer tickets) and was just a hair lower than X-Men: First Class‘s $55.1 million earlier this summer.

Though Rise was beneath Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001)‘s $68.5 million, that was to be expected considering it didn’t cover the franchise’s most iconic territory and was essentially a remake of one of the fractionally popular sequels, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Rise also had to overcome a ten-year franchise dormancy and the taint of audiences’ mixed reaction to the Planet remake.

Twentieth Century Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios today announced the voice cast for ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT, the fourth entry in Blue Sky’s blockbuster franchise.

Joining the ever-growing Ice Age family for Continental Drift is a stellar lineup, including JEREMY RENNER, an Academy Award nominee for The Hurt Locker and The Town (and whose upcoming films include Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and The Bourne Legacy), who portrays Gutt, a self-styled master of the high seas who’s determined to make Manny, Sid and Diego part of his crew; WANDA SYKES as Sid’s stowaway Granny, who causes all sorts of problems for our heroes; AZIZ ANSARI as Squint, a prehistoric rabbit who fancies himself a tough guy; actress-pop music star KEKE PALMER as Peaches, Manny and Ellie’s headstrong teenage daughter; hip hop sensation DRAKE as Ethan, a handsome young woolly mammoth who has his eye on Peaches – and JENNIFER LOPEZ as Shira, a sabre-toothed tigress who melts Diego’s heart.

Cowboys & Aliens lassoed approximately 5,500 screens at 3,750 locations for its run, and claiming a first-place opening only slightly mitigated an otherwise disappointing gross for a movie that tried desperately to be a blockbuster. The sci-fi Western’s launch was on par with Super 8 ($35.5 million) and Battle: Los Angeles ($35.6 million) but behind District 9 ($37.4 million), and none of those movies reached blockbuster territory. Universal’s exit polling indicated that 53 percent of Cowboys’ audience was male and 63 percent was age 30 years and older.

Captain America made an estimated $65.8 million on approximately 7,100 screens at 3,715 locations, edging out fellow Avenger Thor’s $65.7 million as well as Green Lantern’s $53.2 million and X-Men: First Class’s $55.1 million to top the summer’s superhero launches. While the gross difference was a sliver, Captain had nine percent greater estimated attendance than Thor, which received more bolstering from 3D (and had IMAX): Captain’s 3D share was 40 percent at 2,511 3D locations, compared to Thor’s 60 percent at 2,737.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has the highest-grossing opening weekend ever. The series finale drew $169.2 million on around 11,100 screens at 4,375 locations, dethroning The Dark Knight‘s $158.4 million.

Deathly Hallows Part 2′s first weekend flew past the previous franchise high of $125 million, posted by Deathly Hallows Part 1 last November. While its opening gross also out-distanced The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million), The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142.8 million), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($135.6 million) and the first Spider-Man ($114.8 million), Deathly Hallows Part 2′s estimated opening attendance was less than those titles, ranking sixth overall.

3D accounted for 43% of the gross, which was a lower share than Transformers: Dark of the Moon‘s 60% at the same point but in the ballpark of most of this summer’s other big movies. Still, at an estimated $72.8 million, that translated to the second biggest-grossing 3D opening yet, behind Alice in Wonderland (2010)’s $81.3 million.

According to Warner Bros., 54% of Deathly Hallows Part 2′s audience was female, compared to 57% for the last movie, and 45% was under 25 years old, compared to 56% for the last movie.

As a franchise, Harry Potter has now grossed $2.177 billion, and it’s on the brink of eclipsing Star Wars’ $2.218 billion to become the top-grossing franchise in history.

There have been rumours about Evil Dead 4 (sequel or prequel) movie for a while now, with Sam Raimi himself suggesting he’d like to return to the franchise. Now, Sam Raimi’s editor Bob Murawski (Army of Darkness; Spider-man, Drag me to Hell) has packed up and headed out to Detroit to begin work on the long talked about fourth entry into the Evil Dead franchise.

It looks like this IS happening for real now.

On his official Twitter account (@GroovyBruce) Bruce Campbell (Ash) was questioned by a fan who stated, “I won’t believe in a new Evil Dead film until I see it. Or at least not until @GroovyBruce tells me to believe in it,” to which Campbell responded:

Transformers: Dark of the Moon amassed an estimated $175.6 million for its six-day opening ($181.1 million total including Tuesday night previews), ranking as the ninth highest-grossing six-day launch ever. The first Transformers made $155.4 million by day six (including previews), the second one, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, collected $214.9 million by its sixth day. On the other hand, Dark of the Moon’s estimated attendance was far below Revenge of the Fallen and behind the first Transformers by around 15%.

According to the critics of Rotten Tomatoes, Cars 2 is until now the only bad movie from Pixar with a low 33% … they said:

Not that Cars 2 is an actively bad animated film. It’s just sort of an average animated film.

Although it would be unfair to label Cars 2 as unwatchable, it is surprisingly tedious in parts and not as satisfying as one might expect.

Pixar can do bugs, fish and toys, but they just can’t bring these cars to life.

It’s finally happened. Pixar’s mythical run of great films is over.

It looks like a Pixar film, but it sure doesn’t feel like one.

Riding on approximately 7,700 screens at 4,115 locations, Cars 2 ($66 millions) is behind Toy Story 3′s $110.3 million, The Incredibles’ $70.5 million, Finding Nemo’s $70.3 million and Up’s $68.1 million. This sequel out-grossed the first Cars’ $60.1 million opening weekend from June 2006, but trailed it in terms of estimated attendance. Cars 2′s weekend was towards the back of the Pixar attendance pack, ahead of only A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille and Toy Story.

This weekend, Green Lantern’s light was more red than green, but the comic book adaptation still drew an estimated $52.7 million on approximately 7,200 screens at 3,816 locations.

Green Lantern’s start landed behind X-Men: First Class’s $55.1 million and Thor’s $65.7 million. The gross was also less than The Incredible Hulk and the two Fantastic Four movies, and the attendance disparity was only greater. Green Lantern’s estimated attendance was even lower than Daredevil and Ghost Rider.

The Monster’s name is Aqua. It feeds on meat, any kind of meat, specially human meat. It can communicate with people. The Alien looks like a smaller version of the Cloverfield Creature (named Clover), but with a huge head. Aqua has almost the E.T. Alien’s head and the Cloverfield Monster’s body. The designers team of this Monster said that they had added multiple limbs, 8 limbs in total, so the title Super 8 has double meaning, and Aqua also resembles a spider. So it is a Monster with several tentacles coming out of it’s A*s.

Just like Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, actress Rebecca Romijn makes a cameo appearance in X-Men: First Class.

Rebecca played Mystique in the previous X-Men movies. In X-Men: First Class, Mystique is known as Raven, played by Jennifer Lawrence

However, in a scene with Erik Lehnsherr (before he became Magneto), Rebecca Romijn appears as the “older” Raven. Then we see the blue Mystique from the previous movies, since Erik always preferred the “real” Raven.

This is Dr. Moira MacTaggert, interpreted by actress Rose Byrne in X-Men: First Class (2011).

And this is the cameo of Dr. Moira played by Olivia Williams in X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006). She is standing next to a comatose patient. Xavier has transferred his mind into the body of this patient, who is his twin brother, following his physical body being disintegrated by the Phoenix (Jean Grey).

X-Men: First Class obtained $56 million on approximately 6,900 screens at 3,641 locations. Although the first X-Men movie opened to $54.5 million, $56 million in 2011 is far less impressive than $54.5 million in 2000. The first X-Men’s start was the equivalent of over $79 million adjusted for ticket price inflation. On the other hand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, made $85.1 million in its opening weekend.

Earlier this summer, a Marvel Comics adaptation of a lesser character, Thor, mustered $65.7 million out of the gate, and X-Men: First Class was merely on par with The Incredible Hulk’s $55.4 million from June 2008.

The Hangover Part 2 won an estimated $86.5 million over the weekend. With a great Thursday start, its four-day opening came to $118.1 million. Kung Fu Panda 2, on the other hand, fell short of its predecessor.

Playing on approximately 6,700 screens at 3,615 locations, The Hangover Part 2 is the top-grossing weekend ever for a live-action comedy, and it ranked second to The Matrix Reloaded among R-rated movies. For 2011, it had the second-biggest weekend so far, edging out Fast Five, but it likely would have been first if it hadn’t burnt off some demand with its Thursday opening, which was also its top day ($31.6 million).

The first Hangover grossed $45 million in its opening weekend nearly two years ago and was at $52.6 million by day four. It took ten days to pass the $100 million mark.

The after credits scene shows Angelica Malon (Penélope Cruz) left alone on the beach on the island that Jack Sparrow left her on. You see her look down at something in the water and then you see the Jack Sparrow voodoo doll wash up on shore. You see Angelica pick up the doll, and smile at the camera right as the scene ends.

From the trailer it seems to be that actress Anna Faris has retouched her lips back to normal, in her recent movie, The House Bunny, she had huge ugly collagen lips but now Anna looks similar as when she was in Scary Movie, which is great.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides swooped in with the top-grossing weekend of the year so far. The supernatural swashbuckler claimed an estimated $90.1 million at 4,155 locations, edging out Fast Five’s $86.2 million launch. That was also the 12th highest-grossing May opening ever, but, since close to half of On Stranger Tides’ gross was from 3D presentations at a record 2,747 locations (and due to today’s general ticket prices), its estimated attendance level would rank 27th.

Relative to its predecessors, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sank: At World’s End drew $114.7 million on its first weekend in May 2007 (not including $13.2 million in Thursday night previews), while Dead Man’s Chest raked in a then-record $135.6 million opening weekend back in July 2006. Adjusted for ticket price inflation, those grosses would be the equivalent of $131 million and $163 million, respectively.

On Stranger Tides’s start was also less than that of the last Johnny Depp spectacle Alice in Wonderland (2010), which began with $116.1 million.

Thor hammered out $65.7 million at 3,955 locations (and a record of 2,737 locations in 3D), handily dominating the weekend. The Marvel Comics adaptation’s opening salvo wasn’t as thunderous as the Iron Man movies and X-Men Origins: Wolverine ($85.1 million), but it was bigger than Clash of the Titans (2010) ($61.2 million).

That $65.7 million meant Thor had the third highest first-weekend gross yet for the beginning of a Marvel movie franchise after Spider-Man and Iron Man. In terms of estimated attendance, though, Thor’s opening weekend ranked below Hulk, X-Men and Fantastic Four but was still ahead of Daredevil and Ghost Rider. Other Marvel movies that fared better on the attendance front included The Incredible Hulk and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Distributor Paramount Pictures noted that Thor’s start was well above the last 3D event, Tron: Legacy.

Actor Lou Ferrigno, has joined to the cast of The Avengers movie (2012). He will be the voice of Hulk (the CGI animated version).

Mark Ruffalo (Shutter Island) will play Bruce Banner.

Lou Ferrigno originally starred in the 1978 live-action television series The Incredible Hulk as Bruce Banner’s famous alter ego.

Based on the Fox series that ran from 1987 to 1991, the movie will center on two undercover cops (Hill and Tatum), who are assigned to work in schools. Cube is playing the police chief and Larson is the female lead.

Jonah Hill had previously said that they had written a “really funny” cameo for Depp.

Rio remained at the first place of the box office over Easter weekend, edging out another strong start for a Tyler Perry movie and a solid beginning for Water for Elephants.

The animated comedy drew an estimated $26.8 million (57% of which from 3D presentations), down 32%. It made less than How to Train Your Dragon’s $29 million on Easter weekend last year and grossed more than Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! on Easter weekend 2008.

Since the beginning the group Linkin Park always performed the main songs fro the Transformers Movies: What I’ve done, and New Divide were the strong and main melodies for each soundtrack. For the third movie Michael Bay once again wanted them to perform: Iridescent, a great and emotive song, you can hear 30 seconds of it at the end of the video.

Moviegoers flocked to Rio but fled from Scream 4 over the weekend. Thanks to Rio and some decent holdovers, though, this was the first genuinely up weekend year-over-year since early November, boasting an eight percent increase over 2010, when Kick-Ass and How to Train Your Dragon were on top.

Topping the weekend, Hop hatched an estimated $38.1 million on approximately 4,700 screens at 3,579 locations, narrowly edging out Rango to claim the highest-grossing opening weekend of 2011 so far (if the estimate holds). It was also a larger start than G-Force and Beverly Hills Chihuahua but below the two Alvin and the Chipmunks movies among similar titles. Easter comes late this year (April 24), so Hop is well-positioned to play well all month.

Strangely, up until now, Hollywood hasn’t really exploited the Easter holiday in movies. Otherwise, Hop seemed derivative of Alvin and the Chipmunks and many others (the chicks looked like a combination of Despicable Me’s minions and Madagascar’s penguins), but that’s a proven formula for attracting families. For the geeks Kaley Cuoco from The Big Bang Theory appears in Hop, and for the medics, Dr. House gives his voice for Hop’s dad.

In the other hand, Sucker Punch confirms its FAIL, falling from the second place to the seventh.

It seems to be that Darcy will have the role to be the funny character with intelligent jokes and ironies. In this 1 minute she made two great jokes, she compared hammer with hammered (drunk) and ended electrocuting the god with a taser.

In rottentomatoes, Sucker Punch, directed by Zack Snyder, had a very low acceptance during its first weekend, it seems to be that the film is a complete failure, its qualification is 20%, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (the sequel) is not so great either, but better with a 40% according the critics, and that is why it is at the first place in the top ten.

Shane Black will direct and write Iron Man 3. Black, whose previous screenplays include Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, confirmed he would write Iron Man 3′s screenplay.

He said:

The studio was not happy with the direction Iron Man 2 took. Iron Man 3 will not be another “two men in iron suits fighting each other” film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villians.

Iron Man 3 will be made after The Avengers and will not feature any other heroes from the Marvel Universe. Marvel is only doing crossover characters to lead up to The Avengers, and once that film is released, the plan is to go back to self-containted [sic] single-character stories.

Oh boy, the challenge is in how do you go back to a smaller story when audiences have been given the superhero movie to end all superhero movies?

Iron Man 3 will be released on May 3, 2013.

Lost in Translation is my favorite movie from Sofia Coppola.
We all knew the director (Yutaka Tadokoro) was giving Bob much more information than what his interpreter (Akiko Takeshita) was translating for him, but I never knew the actual English translation of what Tadokoro was saying. Below is the translation of the scene.

DIRECTOR (in Japanese to the INTERPRETER:): The translation is very important, O.K.? The translation.
INTERPRETER: Yes, of course. I understand.
DIRECTOR: Mr. Bob-san. You are sitting quietly in your study. And then there is a bottle of Suntory whiskey on top of the table. You understand, right? With wholehearted feeling, slowly, look at the camera, tenderly, and as if you are meeting old friends, say the words. As if you are Bogie in “Casablanca,” saying, “Cheers to you guys” Suntory time!
INTERPRETER: He wants you to turn, look in camera. O.K.?
BOB: That’s all he said?
INTERPRETER: Yes, turn to camera.
