Rumor says The Walking Dead Season 2 will begin in July 2011

All signs have pointed to The Walking Dead’s Season Two debuting in October 31, for Halloween, similar to Season One and coinciding with AMC’s FearFest. But, if Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is to be believed, we could see Season Two in July. Cranston said this in a recent interview.

It was a decision from AMC that they wanted to position us [Breaking Bad] in July, along with Mad Men. And I believe they’re going to put Walking Dead in July as well. I think it’s just a sensible thing, they want to attract as many eyeballs as possible, away from the heavy competition of the September, November, January start.

This may just be wishful thinking. While AMC likely wants to get Season Two out on the air as soon as possible, it will likely take more time to put together a second season, especially now that Frank Darabont will be using freelance writers after some of the staff set themselves up with other shows. Producer Gale Anne Hurd has said that Darabont and comic book creator Robert Kirkman plan to “pick things up early during January 2011” in terms of planning a second season. July might be a squeeze.
