iTunes Store Bug: Your credit card was declined. Please enter valid credit card information

31 / August / 2010 » 119 comments

Since August’s last week many USA iTunes customers while using the store with a Credit Card or PayPal have seen this error message out again and again, unable to buy anything or update their Apps.

Your credit card was declined. Please enter valid credit card information.

When you try to buy something (an app or song) after you login to your account, you get a new window that states:

Verification is required
You must enter your Apple ID and password, click Billing Info, and verify your payment information in order to make purchases.

And once again to log in again to verify your payment details, you get a form with red letters indicating:

You must verify your payment information before you can make purchases.

Although you do update your data, either of PayPal or credit card, and press Done, it again gives the error message:

:!: Your credit card was declined. Please enter valid credit card information

So your credit card was rejected / denied by iTunes, even though you enter valid values in this regard. And this becomes in an infinite loop in which Apple will never accept your data or other cards, which are also valid.

Reasons

There is a theory: Reading some forums about it, most of these mistakes happen when your IP is outside of USA, meaning that even though you use a U.S. Paypal account or credit card, if you are not in the same country, you will have this error.

Some people reported this error while trying to buy something from a not U.S. country with a U.S. account, but when they called a relative in the USA to login with the same account, the error did not exist. :|

Solutions

It is an error from iTunes Store and not from your bank account or PayPal. Sadly, there’s no apparent solutions . I recommend to you to read the following Apple Support forums, maybe a solution will appear there, but until now there is none:

As you can see it is not an isolated error and it is happening to several customers.

Some of them recommend that the best solution is to send an email to Apple Support to the following link and wait 48 hours for a response:

Apple Support, iTunes Store: Billing, managing your account

Hopefully we will have a solution.

If you went through something similar and you solved it, please leave a comment and share your experience :)

UPDATE: Once it was solved by Apple Support, after a few days the same problem returns

iTunes Logo 2011 The first time I got the Credit Card message that it was Declines was on August 28th. I use PayPal with US address and US credit card, but I live in South America.

I sent the first email (using the form) on September the 1st. The same day Apple Support said they will find a solution and they have requested assistance.

I sent a second email on September the 3rd.
I received an Apple email saying my account was solved on September the 4th.

Yesterday (September 7) My account is having again the same problem. (and I have being buying stuff almost everyday).

I am sending a third email today (September 8).

Well, I live in Thailand and I have a US iTunes account and a German iTunes account.
I use gift cards for purchase which friends in the correspondening country.
Only had a problem 2 months ago when it didn’t accept the U.S. address which I has from a phonebook. So I changed it to a friends address and it all worked. With the German iTunes Store I never had a problem at all, always works fine. And I ALWAYS access both stores from Thailand as this is where I live for the last 15 years.
The Thai Store is pretty poor, just apps not more.
I wish Apple could get the licenses to cover all countries but I do understand that this seems pretty difficult. So maybe they should just close their eyes on us “grey” users and not make it too difficult.

I’m a new iPad owner and have also run up against the iTune credit card issue. Mine is slightly different in that when I try to register my credit card it asks for the security code. When I enter the security code, it seems to take but then when I check again it is no longer there. Happens every time. Tried this with 2 credit cards and 1 debit card. Of course I carefully checked the billing address, etc. I have notified Apple Support and waiting for an answer.

Ken Hopkins. Was your problem ever resolved ? :motherofgod:

May the Kindle Fire/similar products cost them horrendous amounts of money in lost sales. If they really think that disqualifying my perfectly good credit card was going to enhance future purchases, they’re wrong, wrong, wrong and it’s over. I came close to using a sledge hammer on my iPod Touch.

Thank You @DanielSemper! I checked my addresses on at appleid.apple.com. Sure enough – there was an incorrect address listed.

Which is weird. But at any rate. I fixed it. My service agreement stops getting canceled now :D.

Hi i purchased an ipod for my daughter and a $30 itune credit everything was working fine until a sudden message that the account has somehow declined. well after reading all of the post everyone had i took notes and i found out after itune credit was gone the charge went to my debit card i gave when i opened my appleid, but because no money was there and you have to enter the security 3 digit code before it can charge it to your account again. s0 this is how i found out how to fix it.

step 1: by using a pc log into your itune account that has the same appleid log in details.
step 2: click on your user name on the top right and go to account info.
step 3: scroll down and click on purchase history, this will give you a list of all the apps you have downloaded and that you have been charge for. in red it will tell you what and if you owed them money.
step 4: now if there is amount owing until this is paid your account will not let you download anything even if it’s a free app.
step 5: when it is paid or owing balance is gone you can now and SHOULD update the credit card details.
step 6: the pictured boxes of the types of card please click on none. this will delete your card detail
” NOW IF I WERE YOU TO AVOID THIS FROM EVER HAPPENING JUST GET AN ITUNE CARD AND STICK TO USING THAT”

I really hope this helped everyone because i know how frustrating it was.

I have been browsing online greater than three hours today, but I by no means found any fascinating article like yours. It is pretty value sufficient for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content as you probably did, the web might be much more helpful than ever before.

I tried 2 different credit cards and an iTunes gift card but it still won’t work. I’ve tried to buy several different things on iTunes but I get the same alert

Just go to Amazon to buy all your music. Phuque Apple. I hope they lose millions on this idiotic bug. I’ll never use them again after this mess….
